Robert Aldrich: Gay Life Stories

Gay Life Stories

Description

This book gives a voice to more than eighty people from every major continent and from all walks of life. It includes poets and philosophers, rulers and spies, activists and artists. Alongside such celebrated figures as Michelangelo, Frederick the Great and Harvey Milk are lesser-known but no less surprising individuals: Dong Xian and the Chinese emperor Ai, whose passion flourished in the 1st century BC; the unfortunate Robert de Peronne, first to be burned at the stake for sodomy; Katharine Philips, writing proto-lesbian poetry in 17th-century England; and 'Aimee' and 'Jaguar', whose love defied the death camps of wartime Germany. With many striking illustrations - including paintings, drawings, photographs and archival documents - Gay Life Stories will entertain, give pause for thought, and ultimately celebrate the diversity of human history.

Person-Focused Health Care Management : A Foundational Guide for Health Care Managers

Description

Moves beyond traditional definitions of patient-centred care to improve the experience of a "real person" as patient. This book asks how might the entire U.S. system for producing, delivering, and paying for health care be changed so that real people fare better than they currently do. It applies "person-focused" principles to health management decision-making aimed at improving the personal experience of care within health care institutions to improve outcomes and cost savings. Written and edited by distinguished educators and researchers with decades of health care policy experience, the text examines how health care managers can initiate and direct the process of system transformation by understanding and using a greater "person-focus" in their decision-making. It encompasses the key domains of management competencies defined by the AUPHA, CAHME, and NCHL. This book brings together experts across a variety of healthcare management disciplines to examine how managerial decisions affect the personal experience of patient care. It is based on observations that many of the current problems facing health care managers are caused by lack of attention to what happens when real people are transformed into "patients" and treated routinely by the U.S. healthcare system. Moving beyond traditional definitions of patient-centred care, it explores how the entire system for producing, delivering, and paying for care can be changed so that the internal experience of people receiving care is a positive one. It helps to develop specific rules for improving the experience of care through better managerial decision-making. Case studies with discussion questions facilitate creative problem solving based on sound decision-making. Also included are extensive links to online content along with an Instructor's Manual, PowerPoint slides and more. Key Features: * Describes how the person-focused model leads to better outcomes.* Discusses the impact of management decisions on the personal experience of clinical care. * Addresses the personal and clinical problems created through our current system's standard health care delivery and financing.* Applies basic principles of management decision-making to key operational issues to improve the personal experience of care.* Fulfils key learning competencies defined by AUPHA, CAHME, and NCHL.

Molecular Basis of Reproductive Endocrinology

Description

Recent advances in molecular biology have provided new dimensions in the study of the reproductive system. There has been major progress in our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of hormone action in the past few' years. The symposium on "Molecular Basis of Reproductive Endocrinology" was organized to highlight new research findings on the regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. The emphasis of the symposium was on physiological questions answered by the molecular biology approach. Studies on the functional relevance of gonadotropin releasing hormone and LH and FSH gene expression were presented, together with research on the molecular biology of ovarian and testicular steroidogenic enzymes and protein hormones. Also, several novel aspects of hormone gene expression in placental tissues were reviewed. The symposium was held July 25 to 26, 1991, immediately prior to the 24th Annual Meeting of the Society for the Study of Reproduction, on the campus of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Serono Symposia, USA generously financed and coordinated the meeting. We are indebted to Dr. Bruce K. Burnett and Dr. L. Lisa Kern for their professional assistance in the organization of the symposium. We would also like to thank Drs. Victor Gomel, Basil Ho Yuen, and John Challis, who served as session moderators. Most of all, we truly appreciate the efforts of all the invited speakers, poster presenters, and discussants in making this a memorable event as the largest one-day meeting of the Serono Symposia USA, series.

How to Read and Interpret the Runes: Using Runes for Divination, Protection, Healing and Understanding

Description

This title helps you discover the ancient mysteries of the runic alphabet, devised by the peoples of Northern Europe and linked to the Norse legends. You can learn how to consult and interpret runes, for yourself and for others. It includes instructions on how to make and dedicate your own set of runes. It offers detailed explanations of the significance and symbolism of each of the 24 runes in the runic alphabet, together with easy-to-follow sample rune readings. It is illustrated with specially commissioned photographs that clearly explain the meanings of runestones, while celebrating their mysterious beauty. Since the dawn of time, people have found signs and symbols fascinating, and runes are some of the most powerful signs of all. The runic alphabets were devised by early Germanic societies in the 1st century AD, and were later used as a means of gaining deeper understanding of life through divination. For hundreds of years they have offered ways of coping with the journey through life by providing access to a greater wisdom. This highly accessible guide demonstrates how to access, question and understand the runes. The meaning of each individual rune is explained in detail, and sample rune readings that relate to common dilemmas show how to interpret the answers provided. You can choose between simple one- or three-rune draws, and more complex spreads using up to nine, and learn how to read the answers to your questions. The fully illustrated book is a highly accessible introduction to the use of this ancient alphabet for divination, protection and healing, and offers a path to spiritual understanding that anyone can tread.

A sorcerer slaughters the King and his entire court in front of the disbelieving eyes of young Prince D'zan. From that moment, D'zan is driven by one thought - the need to regain his father's stolen throne. The lives of six foreign Princes are tied to D'zan's fate, as he seeks allies for his cause. In a land where Men and Giants battle side by side against ancient monsters and chilling sorcery, only one thing is certain - war is coming. How to Read and Interpret the Runes: Using Runes for Divination, Protection, Healing and Understanding download ebook Kingdoms will clash and blood will run. Seven Princes. Seven destinies. All will be legend. --Dr. Alfred Gottschalk, chancellor, Hebrew Union College"Dosick's passionate yet clear thinking will open our religious traditions to those seeking ways into their Judaism." Lepetit casts new light on the connection between key figures of the movement and the circle of adepts gathered around Fulcanelli. He also explores the relationship between surrealists and Freemasonry, Martinists, and the Elect Cohen as well as the Grail mythos and the Arthurian brotherhood."

Allergy-Friendly Food for Families: 120 Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, Nut-Free, Egg-Free, and Soy-Free Recipes Everyone Will Enjoy

Description

Feeding a family with food allergies doesn t have to be boring or tasteless. Kiwi, the premier magazine about raising families the natural and organic way, presents 120 great recipes to keep your family happy, healthy and sane. "Allergy-Friendly Food for Families" is the most trustworthy, comprehensive, practical, and kid-friendly collection of recipes that exists for the important and growing audience of allergy-aware families. Unlike other allergy cookbooks, this book covers not one or two allergens, but the five most common allergens in kids: wheat, dairy, eggs, nuts, and soy. Each of the 120 recipes is free of at least three of these allergens; most are free of all five. When parents are desperate for ideas for what to make for dinner (or lunch, or snack time), they want recipes from someone they trust, for food that tastes good, that doesn't require a lot of fancy ingredients, and that the whole family can eat. "Allergy-Friendly Food for Families" is the ultimate resource. From the three crucial mealtimes (breakfast, lunch, dinner) to the "fun" foods families can't live without (desserts, snacks, parties), parents are completely covered. Perhaps most importantly, all of these recipes are simple for parents to make. Recipes such as Carrot Cake Breakfast Cookies, Pear Yogurt Dunkers, Good-for-you Nachos, Polenta Mini Pizzas, Giant Cookie Cake, Veggie Bite Soup, and Cool Zucchini Noodles will make kids forget they have allergies. Parents will love the additional informational sections on spotting food allergies, stocking an allergy-free pantry, deciphering labels, and other frequently asked questions. Food should be delicious; family time should be fun. This book reflects those values."

Claude Hopkins, the father of modern advertising techniques, believed that "Advertising is salesmanship," and as such it should be measurable and justify the results that it produced. In Scientific Advertising, he explains precisely how to do that, and the principles he discovered and documented are as true today as when they were first written. This business classic covers mail-order marketing, headlines, psychology, strategy, budgeting, and more advanced subjects like negative advertising and how to test an advertising campaign. Whatever advertising medium you use, from print to the Internet, the fundamental principles of Scientific Advertising are universal and timeless. When vitamins were discovered a mere century ago, they changed the destiny of the human species by preventing and curing many terrifying diseases. Yet it wasn t long before vitamins spread from labs of scientists into the realm of food marketers and began to take on a life of their own. The era of vitamania, as one 1940s journalist called it, had begun. Though we ve gained much from our embrace of vitamins, what we ve lost is a crucial Allergy-Friendly Food for Families: 120 Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, Nut-Free, Egg-Free, and Soy-Free Recipes Everyone Will Enjoy free epub sense of perspective. By buying into a century of hype and advertising, we have accepted the false idea that particular dietary chemicals can be used as shortcuts to health whether they be antioxidants or omega-3s or, yes, vitamins. And it s our vitamin-inspired desire for effortless shortcuts that created today s dietary supplement industry, a veritable Wild West of overpromising miracle substances that can be legally sold without any proof that they are effective or safe.

The Adventures of Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth

Description

This first book from Chicago author Chris Ware is a pleasantly-decorated view at a lonely and emotionally-impaired "everyman" ("Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth"), who is provided, at age 36, the opportunity to meet his father for the first time. An improvisatory romance which gingerly deports itself between 1890's Chicago and 1980's small town Michigan, the reader is helped along by thousands of colored illustrations and diagrams, which, when read rapidly in sequence, provide a convincing illusion of life and movement. The bulk of the work is supported by fold-out instructions, an index, paper cut-outs, and a brief apology, all of which concrete to form a rich portrait of a man stunted by a paralyzing fear of being disliked. "From the Hardcover edition."

* Contains a secret history of Wall Street, the parts all the other books leave The Adventures of Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth free download pdf out * Includes an intellectually rigorous narrative addressing what it takes to really make it in any risky activity, on or off Wall Street * Addresses essential issues ranging from the way you think about chance to economics, politics, finance, and life * Written by Aaron Brown, one of the most calculated and successful risk takers in the world of finance, who was an active participant in the creation of modern risk management and had a front-row seat to the last meltdown * Written in an engaging but rigorous style, with no equations * Contains illustrations and graphic narrative by renowned manga artist Eric Kim There are people who disapprove of every risk before the fact, but never stop anyone from doing anything dangerous because they want to take credit for any success. The recent financial crisis has swelled their ranks, but in learning how to break free of these people, you'll discover how taking on the right risk can open the door to the most profitable opportunities.

Lemony Snicket: The Bad Beginning

The Bad Beginning

Description

There is nothing to be found in the pages of A Series of Unfortunate Events but misery and despair. You still have time to choose another international best-seller to read. But if you must know what unpleasantries befall the charming and clever Baudelaire children read on...In The Bad Beginning the three youngsters encounter a greedy and repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune and cold porridge for breakfast. Then again, why trouble yourself with the unfortunate resolutions? With 5 million copies sold in the UK alone, one might consider Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events to make him one of the most successful children's authors of the past decade. We, however, consider these miserable so-called adventure stories and the Hollywood film starring Jim Carrey that accompanied the books for children as nothing more than a dreadful mistake.

Susan Mallery: Three Sisters

Three Sisters

Description

"New York Times" bestselling author Susan Mallery's prose has been called "gritty and magical" and "luscious and provocative" ("Publishers Weekly"). Now she returns to Blackberry Island with the story of three women whose friendship will change their lives forever. After Andi Gordon is jilted at the altar, she makes the most impetuous decision of her lifebuying one of the famed Three Sisters Queen Anne houses on Blackberry Island. Now the proud-ish owner of the ugly duckling of the trio, she plans to open her own pediatric office on the first floor, just as soon as her hunky contractor completes the work. Andi's new future may be coming together, but the truth is she's just as badly in need of a major renovation as her house. When Deanna Phillips confronts her husband about a suspected affair, she opens up a Pandora's box of unhappiness. And he claims that she is the problem. The terrible thing is, he's right. In her quest to be the perfect woman, she's lost herself, and she's in danger of losing her entire family if things don't change. Next door, artist Boston King thought she and her college sweetheart would be married forever. Their passion for one another has always seemed indestructible. But after tragedy tears them apart, she's not so sure. Now it's time for them to move forward, with or without one another. Thrown together by fate and geography, and bound by the strongest of friendships, these three women will discover what they're really made of: laughter, tears, love and all."
